What To Do if a Fire Starts?

Learn what you and your family should do if a fire starts in your home.

Firewise

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has developed the FIREWISE program.  This program will show you how to adapt to living with wildfire.  The FIREWISE USA website has information that homeowners can use to help prepare their home and community for wildfire.

Fuels Mitigation

South Dakota Wildland Fire administers a cost share program to help homeowners reduce hazardous fuels through thinning and removal of ladder fuels around their residence.  Treatments will meet FIREWISE standards.

Black Hills Fire Protection District

That portion of the Battle Creek Fire Protection District that is located west of Highway 79 is also included in the Black Hills Fire Protection District.  The use of fireworks and exploding targets within the Black Hills Fire Protection District is prohibited.  Campfires, fire pits and burn barrels on private property located west of Highway 79 are regulated and must be inspected and a permit obtained from the SD Wildland Fire Division, unless you live within the Keystone city limits, then you must obtain a permit from the Battle Creek Fire Department. Slash piles can be burned in the winter provided that there is adequate snow cover on the ground and after a burn permit is obtained from South Dakota Wildland Fire Division. During times of high fire danger, Custer and Pennington Counties may implement burn bans that impose further restrictions or completely ban open flames throughout the entire county.
